Dr (?) Jim Perrin’s involvement with TGO

We noticed the following on Mark’s walking blog. He posted it on the 10/6/2011 and it was headed: ‘Re-vamped TGO magazine.’

There were flattering and well-deserved observations on the ‘new look’ and among the comments which followed was Alan Sloman’s:  ‘They have ditched Jim Perrin (did anyone ever get past the first three paragraphs without wondering what he was on?) and given space to writers who seem able to get their message across.’

Mark replied:  ‘I don’t think I ever read Jim Perrin articles let alone get past the first three paragraphs !!’  and Martin Rye said:  ‘Based on that I might start reading it again. Got fed up with paying for stuff I would not read like Perrin and water-pistols at dawn.’

These were opinions to which they were entitled but while ‘ditched’ Dr. Perrin may well (and some think should) have been, we note that somehow he has managed to cling by chalked fingertips to the dizzying heights of this prestigious title and, what is more, is now in a position to review the writing of others — both the quick and the dead.

A questionable sinecure, as his words have  so frequently been the means to malign the work of other authors — which was certainly the case when he wrote an article for the ‘Sunday Telegraph’, ref.  Jim Perrin sharpens his little knife again? On the other hand, the reflected glory of his positive reviews of work by those whom he wishes to please should never be under-estimated…

Dr. Perrin, though, is not a person whose ideas or opinions should be sought or given credence. To read all that we have so far disclosed on ‘jacssisters’ is to become aware how dishonourable a man he is — and shown to be so by his own words and actions.

Details of our site were sent to Emily Rodway and to Cameron MacNeish and his wife to name but three; they seem to have been disregarded. Why is it that Jim Perrin, under the auspices of this magazine, is able to flourish? A man who has been ‘outed’ as a wife-beater and an abuser of women; as a writer of dubious letters (some anonymously);  as one who has assaulted his peers in the spheres of climbing and author-ship — both physically and psychologically; and as a liar (for sympathy) about his purported Terminal Lung Cancer. Ref. Jim Perrin diagnosed with terminal lung cancer?  Also there were, for good measure, his unedifying attempts to influence the juries of book competitions — notably, the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature, and associated libels. Ref. Jim Curran v Jim Perrin.

We believe, if all this were not enough to put a man beyond the pale, that Dr. Perrin over many years has planted defamatory reviews of work by perceived rivals and, of his own, only the most fulsome — using the alias ‘Llywarch‘; although now, since our many posts on the subject, he has switched this name and all the linked texts, to ‘Tim Bartley’.

None of this even touches on the reasons which originally impelled us to set up this site; and since then we have posted much of what has been told to us by others… No, it was when we discovered the unpardonable lies that he had written about our sister, Jac , (particularly as we knew how desperately unhappy she had become within the relationship and how determined she was to end it). These culminated in his claims — his descriptions — of how he had been with her, and held her, as she lay dying and at her death. To his eternal discredit he was brazenly lying: he was elsewhere. Ref. Jim Perrin deserted Jacquetta.

We wonder why in view of all that is now known about him he is allowed to ‘lord it’ in TGO? What reasons might there be? What mysterious ‘hold’ could he possibly have? (It was once, only 1/2 jokingly, suggested to us that Jim Perrin ‘knew where the bodies were buried’… )  Despite everything, *Dr. Perrin’s Friends in High Places seem to have a continuing, if wary, regard and for reasons best known to themselves they still support him…
